Septic Tanks
When wastewater leaves your home, it all flows into the same place: the septic tank. Here, it separates into three layers. Fats, oils, and greases rise to the top, forming a scum layer. Some particles lose their buoyancy and settle to the bottom of the tank, forming a sludge layer. The middle layer is the clear zone, which eventually makes its way out to the field lines. Modern day septic tanks are usually made of concrete or plastic.
